3 Tools Every Successful Songwriter Needs
3 Tools Every Successful Songwriter Needs Suzy S. Do you want to write songs, but arent sure where to start? After youve asked yourself these two questions, its time to gather your materials and get to work. Read on for advice from Austin, TX teacher Gfire M... Having started writing songs at age 11, then having studied with well-known songwriting teachers from Boston, LA, and Nashville, I have learned to keep three essential tools on my desk whenever I am developing a lyric. If you do the same, you will be able to add depth and originality to your songwriting and it makes it more fun as well! Here are your three tools to help you as you write songs: 1) A dictionary The dictionary helps you make sure the definition of a word really reflects what you want it to. Letâs take the word âloveâ as an example. The first definition on dictionary.com is âa profoundly tender, passionate affection for another person.â That may be pretty accurate, but it is definitely used a lot! Which brings us to the next tool 2) A thesaurus A thesaurus gives you other choices for that word, which may be more specific to what you are trying to say. It also gives you choices that arenât so overworked. With thesaurus.com (just a click away from dictionary.com), you can at least consider some synonyms for âloveâ such as âpassion,â âcrush,â âemotion,â and âflame.â 3) A rhyming dictionary A rhyming dictionary helps you out of trying to come up with rhymes out of thin air. âLoveâ is notoriously hard to rhyme (who needs another âturtle doveâ), so check out the rhymes (try rhymezone.com) for âflameâ and, all of a sudden, you have options such as âgame,â âname,â and âsame.â Now weâll try another well-used word, âremember.â First we will look in the dictionary. One definition is âto retain in the memory; keep in mind; remain aware of.â That sounds good, on to the thesaurus. Some synonyms for ârememberâ include ârecall,â âlook back,â and âremind.â Oh boy, this is starting to sound interesting now onto the rhyming dictionary! For âremember,â the choices are quite limited: âember,â âmember,â âDecemberâ these rhymes are not so hot. BUT when you look up rhymes for ârecallâ including âfall,â âsmall,â âwall,â and âlong haulâ there are a lot more selections. If your song could use ârecallâ instead of âremember,â you will have many more ways to go with your lyric. With âlook back,â we could use âblack,â âcrack,â âlack,â or âattack.â And rhymes for âremindâ are cool, too âblind,â âfind,â âsigned,â âaligned,â and âbehind.â Having all of these new words to paint a picture will help you stay excited and interested in your budding lyric. An Easy Exercise to Help You Write Songs Pick a word from a song you wrote, are writing, or want to write. Plug it into the dictionary, thesaurus, and rhyming dictionary, and you are ready to play around with your lyrics to make them original and full of meaning for you and your listeners. If you still find yourself struggling after adding these tools to your routine, consider working with a songwriting teacher. A quality teacher can help you improve your songwriting technique much faster than working on your own. Get ready to express yourself in your own unique songwriting style! You deserve to have this creative outlet, and you can totally make it happen for yourself! Gfire teaches music theory, opera voice, piano, singing, and songwriting in Austin, TX. The History of the Tudors
The History of the Tudors The Things You Always Wanted to Know About the Tudor Period ChaptersWho Were the Tudors? The Tudor MonarchsWhat Was it Like in the Tudor Times?Facts about the Tudor DynastyWe all know a little about the Tudors â" whether we like it or not. The six wives are usually the first thing people mention â" followed shortly by the strange aura that surrounds the figure of Anne Boleyn in particular. Then there is the great conflict between Catholicism and Protestantism â" and the dissolution of the monasteries, something that really changed the English landscape permanently. Or the Spanish Armada, the fleet of ships sent by Philip II to attack England â" only to be swept off course by the winds.Tudor history is something we all know something about. Or at least think we know something about. However, this long and complex period still holds many surprises indeed â" and so it can never hurt to go over it again. Here, weâre going to take a long look at this most captivating of periods in the history of England. And weâre willing to bet that youâl l learn something that you didnât know before. However, letâs tackle the important question first. Why Do We Care so Much about the Tudors? There is something a little strange about the Tudors. This period is perhaps the one moment in English history â" along with perhaps the Second World War â" that you will definitely cover at least a little at school. As a nation, we seem to be a little enamoured by this House of Tudor, with TV shows, films, and endlessly popular books being published on the period. This long sixteenth century â" between 1485 and 1603 â" seems to hold a special place in the English imaginary.Yet, why might this be?The common answer to this is that some of the biggest leaps towards the country that England is today were taken during this period. The gradual centralisation of the English state, the move towards a Protestant Church of England under King Edward VI, and the flourishing of a distinctly English literary and artistic culture. All of this happened dur ing this period. And with all this was born a nation â" a nation distinct from Catholic Europe â" and an empire. In a way then, the Tudor period was the formative moment of English as an identity. Because, really, they were not a particularly stable dynasty â" nor one that actually had much legit imacy at all.The family themselves were from Wales â" a family of the Welsh nobility â" and had a claim to the English throne through Edward IIIâs son, John of Gaunt. Henry VII was the great-grandson of an illegitimate child of John of Gaunt â" which, in the great scheme of things, was not really a watertight claim to the highest position in the country. This is why, throughout Henry VIIâs reign, there were a number of rebellions and attempted coups that tried to replace the first Tudor king with a Yorkist. The unified Tudor Rose, using the two roses from the Wars of the Roses. Image from WikipediaThe Wars of the Roses (1455-1485)As you might well know, the Tudors came to power at the end of the War of the Roses, when Henry Tudor defeated Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth Field. This war was the result of major disagreements regarding who would take the throne, with the House of York on one side and the House of Lancaster on the other. This Lancastrian, Henry Tudor, ultimately defeated the Yorkists. And his great achievement was to unite the country â" largely â" after thirty years of war. He married Elizabeth of York and brought power under himself. And, thus, the Tudor dynasty was born â" in 1485.The Union of the Crowns (1603)It ended in 1603, on the death of Elizabeth I. The whole dynasty had been anxious about the need for an heir â" a problem of succession that was exacerbated by the distant memory of the chaos that preceded them.Yet, Elizabeth â" unmarried, or rather, as s he said, married to the country â" did not produce one. And so the Tudor dynasty ended on her death.James VI of Scotland â" the great-great-grandson of Henry VII â" replaced her, unifying two separate political entities, Scotland and England, under one crown. Here the Tudors ended, and the Stuarts began.Check out our article on the question, Who Were the Tudors? The Tudor MonarchsLetâs take a look at the Tudor monarchs â" or at least those who we remember as such. There were five of them, with two of the longest reigns in English history and two of the briefest. If you want to know more about the Tudor kings and queens in greater detail, check out our article on the Tudor monarchs.Henry VII: Henry Tudor (1485-1509)Henry VII, the first Tudor king, is known by historians as a fairly uninspiring bloke who brought stability, financial competence, and peace to England. Not really a bad set of achievements if we must say.His reign essentially enabled the excess, the indulgence, and the military exploits of his sonâs. And by bringing the distant elements of the kingdom under greater central control, he laid the ground for Henry VIIIâs attempts to do the same.King Henry VIII (1509-1547)The six wives, the dissolution of the monasteries, the English reformation. There are few kings more famous in English history than Henry VIII.A charismatic figure when young, he died a grumpy, unpleasant, and severely ill man. And whilst his policies perhaps did more to change the face of England than anyone elseâs during this period, he wasnât necessarily the shrewdest of kings.Unnecessary, expensive wars and severe popular reaction to his policies, he was lucky to make it to the end of his reign.Edward VI (1547-1553)The boy king with the bad health, Edward VI succeeded his father in 1547, at the age of ten.A committed Protestant, he made his fatherâs reforms of the Church of England much more radical â" under the supervision of two hugely influential advisors, Somerset and Northumberland. However, he died only six years later â" with his own anxiety about his successor clear in his mind. His attempts to put Lady Jane Grey â" another Protestant â" on the throne after his death ended tragically.Mary I (1553-1558)And so, Mary I, Edwardâs half-sister, became queen. Staunchly Catholic and periodically ill throughout her life, her reign was a tumultuous one.Sheâs known for returning England back under the religious jurisdiction of Rome, for reversing all of Edwardâs â" and many of Henryâs â" religious reforms, and for her offensive against Protestants in England. Hence the name Bloody Mary. Mary I maybe wasn't so bloody as we like to thinkQueen Elizabeth I of England (1558-1603)The Golden Age of early modern England, the Elizabethan era will be remembered forever â" for its cultural production, its colonial expansion, and for its consolidation of the English church and state.Elizabeth returned the kingdom to Protestantism â" and presided over a period of English success. What Was it Like in the Tudor Times? However, enough of the monarchs. What would it have been like for you in the Tudor era?The simple answer to this lies in the question of class â" or, to use a less historically contested term, your place in the social hierarchy. (Photo by: Photo 12/UIG via Getty Images)Class in the Sixteenth CenturyYour social position in the Tudor times was something that was pretty much entirely based on birth. If you were one of the third of people living in poverty, chances are you would stay there for much of your life. If, on the other hand, you were born into a noble family, youâd probably do all right â" unless you fell into the monarchâs disfavour. The whole universe was conceived as a great hierarchy, the Great Chain of Being, as it has become known â" from God to the poorest people to the animals. This idea meant that you probably wouldnât complain too much about your position.Work During the TudorsAnd your work was determined by your social position too. Again, if you were a noble, you could expect some sort of influence over politics and at the royal court. If you were poor, however, youâd probably be a peasant â" given that much of the population was rural. The trouble for the poor was that it was really crucial not to become unemployed. Because this, amazingly, was punishable by death.Read more about what life was like in the Tudor times!Facts about the Tudor DynastySo, you think you know about the Tudors? How Introverts Can Make the Most Out of Being Mentored at Work - Introvert Whisperer
Introvert Whisperer / How Introverts Can Make the Most Out of Being Mentored at Work - Introvert Whisperer How Introverts Can Make the Most Out of Being Mentored at Work A good mentor can be a tremendous asset at work. They can help guide you through your career, they can answer questions when you get stuck, and they can also be a person to vent to when things get tough. But introverts are far less likely to seek out mentors. Often times the daily social contact we go through at the office is more than what we need, practically no one wants to seek out more But research suggests that having a mentor can provide a big boost to your career. So even though itâs difficult, you should try your best to find a mentor and make use of them. However, since mentorship is in many ways designed by and for extroverts, youâre going to have to approach things in a different way. And here are four ways you can do this. Sign Up For Formal Mentoring Programs To be able to make the most out of a mentor-mentee relationship, you need to first have a mentor. And for most introverts, this can prove to be the most difficult part of the process. And this is where formal mentoring programs come into place. Many companies recognize the value of a mentor, and they offer these programs as a way to help people take advantage of them. And most of these programs will allow you to specify some of your interests so that you stand a better chance of matching up with someone and having a connection. This is helpful for introverts because it makes it more likely youâll find someone you like to work with. But the real value is that it forces you to meet with someone. As introverts, if we rely on ourselves to make this initial contact, it will never happen. However, if all we have to do is answer a few questions online and put our name on a list, then it becomes much easier to initiate this type of relationship and get all the rewards. Of course, it will still be difficult in the beginning, but this is a great way to get you started and heading in the right direction. Be Open With Your Mentor Part of the reasons we struggle as introverts is because people donât understand what introversion is and how it affects us. Most of the extroverts who have no experience with introversion will just label you as âquietâ or a âloner.â But this represents a gross misunderstanding of what introversion is. So, to get the most out of working with a mentor, itâs important to be upfront with them right away. If theyâre not familiar with introverts, then spend some time talking about it. Maybe even suggest they do some reading about it so that they can be more informed. This might sound weird, or even a bit uncomfortable, but this is where you need to have some faith in people. If someone has signed up or has agreed to be your mentor, then this is a sign they are willing to help. And in your case, to be helpful, they will need to understand what introversion is as well as some of the challenges it can present. This helps prevent you from ending up with someone who tells you to âopen up,â or âjust be yourself,â or worse, who suggests you join a public speaking group. You need someone who will give you advice thatâs going to work, and for this to happen, you need to be open and honest with your mentor right from the beginning. Choose Communication Forms You Like The beauty of a mentor-mentee relationship is that itâs far more relaxed than many of the other interactions we have at work. You donât need to sit through uncomfortable one-on-ones, or go to loud, chaotic coffee shops or bars, if you donât want to. In fact, you donât even need to meet face-to-face all that often. Again, this is part of the reason itâs so important to be open with your mentor from the beginning. If itâs easier for you to communicate via text message or email, let them know. You may want to meet with them in person every once in a while just to touch base, but donât force yourself into situations you donât want to just because. Your relationship with your mentor will be much better if you can communicate in ways that make sense for you. Pick Someone You Feel Comfortable With Lastly, itâs important to work with someone who you feel comfortable with. This means finding someone who shares similar interests, or maybe even someone who exhibits some of the personality traits of an introvert.
